I LOVE LOVE my cast iron skillet for cooking. And with just a little love and care, it can be your best friend in the kitchen too.
I love that cast iron skillets have made a come back. I’ve been using them for years because they are inexpensive, versatile, and last FOREVER. Their heavy bottoms make for super even cooking, and if you take care of them right, they are super easy to clean. THIS is my go to cast iron skillet for daily cooking. If fun colors are your thing, THIS one is really fun.
Did you know that once you have properly seasoned your cast iron skillet, you should never use soap or cleaners on them? You don’t want to remove that beautiful seasoning that keeps food from sticking to your pan. So what do I clean my cast iron skillets with?
I used to just use plain hot water and a pan scraper. But when my friend, Halle, came out with her book, Natural Solutions for Cleaning and Wellness, I found the BEST cast iron skillet cleaner EVER. Now I’m using it all of the time. And it only takes hot water and 2 things you already have in your kitchen.
Over the years, I have replaced almost all store-bought cleaners in my home with DIY cleaning recipes. Halle’s book has taken my cleaning recipes to the next level. She shares recipes for things like Powdered Dishwasher Detergent and Rinse Aid, Granite Counter Cleaner, and Streak-Free Window Cleaner – all made from things I already have laying around my house. I just tried her Oven Cleaner (I’m embarrassed to say how long it had been since I cleaned it! ) and it worked beautifully. I’ve been having so much fun trying out all of the recipes
And that’s not all! Halle also shares a ton of natural solutions for common health problems. Everything from headaches and migraines, acne, swimmer’s ear, cough and sore throat, and stomach ache to eczema, razor bumps, constipation, bloating, insomnia, and anxiety. It’s like the natural remedy recipe guide for people (like you and me) who want to live a cleaner, more natural life AND save money while doing it. Less toxins. More health. Over 140 natural solutions for cleaning and wellness. I love love this book!
The ultimate, comprehensive guide to natural, non-toxic cleaning and wellness solutions made with ingredients around your home.

OK… now back to that cast iron skillet cleaner recipe. Halle’s recipe has made using my cast iron skillets so much easier. And take less than a minute to do. Now every time I wash my skillet, I use her method. After scrubbing with the kosher salt and rinsing with hot water, I dry my skillet over a low flame on the stovetop, then rub it liberally with olive oil. My pans have never been happier.
2 Ingredient Cast Iron Skillet Cleaner
What you’ll need:
hot water
1-3 tbsp (15-45 g) kosher salt (like this)
1-2 tsp (5-10 ml) olive oil (THIS my favorite brand)
Directions:
- Put some hot water in the skillet. With a sponge or a stiff brush, scrub the skillet clean.
- If there is a lot of caked-on food, generously sprinkle with kosher salt. (Kosher salt is a soft, flaky salt that will not damage your skillet.) Rub the kosher salt into the skillet with a circular motion, and the food particles will come right off.
- Rinse the skillet in clean, hot water, and rub olive oil over the entire surface, including the outside of the skillet.
NOTE: To prevent rust from forming on a cast iron skillet, you need to oil your pan after each use, after cleaning.
